Motile
An exploration of shape and volume in metal and other materials
The work in this exhibition came after I had taken photographs of some marbles in a glass bowl. It was a very bright sunny day and the reflections in the bowl made some interesting patterns. I was able to draw some of those patterns and later make 3D shapes from them, so you could say that I was working from the inside outwards. From that starting point the shapes took form in space and continued to be developed using different processes and materials.
The moving hanging pieces — Motile — are the first core pieces and the others follow on from them. It seems that there are still many more possible shapes and structures to come from the original idea so new forms keep appearing. This has been a surprising development but I am pleased that it has happened!
