Sea Thoughts
Explorations in aluminium and wood
The wood used in this work is primarily yew. Some of the wood pieces have additions of copper, ceramic and glass, rope, and pewter. Originally called End Of Thought, these works were so often described to me as invoking the sea (one is titled Spray, and another Sail) or parts of ships, that I decided to adopt this general title, though it is a more literal title than I normally adopt. Again it is the materials leading the way.
The wood pieces had been lying outdoors for some time so needed to be cleaned of decay, rubbed down, sanded and oiled, and then used as found objects, the general shape left as it was found, and additions made. This is an ongoing project as there are several more pieces to make their way into the studio. I am looking forward to this although sanding this very hard wood is quite difficult!
It is best not to leave the wood pieces outside indefinitely, as the wood will suffer in wet conditions. The exception of course is the aluminium piece that has been in a private garden all year. As indoor pieces the others are successful, as three in private spaces demonstrate. It’s best to come to the studio to see and appreciate the warmth of these natural wall hung pieces.
